Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh
This spectacular high-altitude desert treats intrepid visitors to vast unspoilt landscapes and fascinating Tibetan Buddhist culture. Boasting extreme terrain and thin air, it is best suited to the bolder adventurer. With a focus on homestays, the region is keen to promote sustainable approaches to tourism. Visitors are encouraged to learn about mountain culture first-hand, so don’t be surprised to be invited to participate in village pastimes such as making the local delicacy churpi (chewy yak cheese) or to help with harvest activities. Many ancient monasteries can be found in the area, making it a popular Buddhist pilgrimage spot. Added to that, inconsistent mobile signal coverage in these parts promises to make this the digital detox you always promised yourself.
