Accelerating inclusivity, Bank DBS Indonesia gives appreciation to 50 students with disabilities who have completed the "DBS Bersiap" programme
Indonesia, 04 Sep 2024 - Bank DBS Indonesia has completed the
“DBS Bersiap”
programme that was launched in May 2024 in collaboration with Koneksi Indonesia Inklusif (KONEKIN). The programme provided students with disabilities with online workshops and mentoring to develop the skills and character traits they need in the workplace. Today, Bank DBS Indonesia and KONEKIN gave appreciation to students who met the graduation requirements. The graduation ceremony was attended by Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications at PT Bank DBS Indonesia
Mona Monika
, KONEKIN Indonesia CEO & Founder
Marthella Sirait
, and around 50 students from various regions in Indonesia, including from Jabodetabek, West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Kalimantan, West Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenko PMK RI) 2023 data show that there are 22.97 million people with disabilities in Indonesia. The number represents around 8.5 percent of the population. However, until 2022, only around 7.6 million of them had found employment in both the formal and informal sectors. This indicates that proactive and continuous efforts by all parties are crucial to improve inclusivity in the workplace.
In view of the above, KONEKIN exists as a social enterprise with a mission to encourage an inclusive ecosystem in Indonesia through information dissemination, increasing the participation of people with disabilities in public spaces, and creating cross-sector collaboration. “KONEKIN has the 'spark' or passion to make everyone AWARE about disability issues so that they WANT to get involved until finally we are ABLE to achieve an inclusive Indonesia. Therefore, we are pleased to collaborate with Bank DBS Indonesia in the DBS Bersiap programme, which aims at making a meaningful impact for individuals with disabilities across Indonesia and prepare them for a successful transition into the professional world,” said KONEKIN Indonesia CEO & Founder
Marthella Sirait
.
For three months, the participants, consisting of students from third-semester to fresh graduates, were provided with insights into various topics such as work ethics, financial literacy and investment, communication styles in a professional setting, problem-solving, how to choose the right career path, and skill development at individual and organizational levels. All of these insights can be used in everyday life to build a future-ready workforce.
The programme was an effort to bridge the learning gap for people with disabilities as well as confirming Bank DBS Indonesia's commitment to upholding diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI) in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) aimed at alleviating poverty and providing equal access to education.
“We are very proud of all the participants who have successfully completed the series of activities in the DBS Bersiap programme. As a purpose-driven bank and in line with Bank DBS Indonesia's 'Trust Your Spark' campaign, we believe that every individual has a spark that spurs them to be better every day despite the challenges they face. Through that spark, we are confident that the DBS Bersiap participants will be able to break barriers and become individuals who will benefit the environment and the country in the future,” said Head of Group Strategic Marketing and Communications at PT Bank DBS Indonesia
Mona Monika.
Around 50 students actively participated in various mentoring classes and workshops provided by Bank DBS Indonesia employees as mentors and facilitators to share knowledge and experience with participants based on their expertise. The initiative was part of the employee volunteering programme called People of Purpose involving all levels of employees to contribute either by providing services to the community (service-based) or sharing their knowledge (knowledge-based or skill-based).
Apart from DBS Bersiap, Bank DBS Indonesia through its People of Purpose activities also has several employee skill-based initiatives to make across-the-broad contributions to society. These include providing financial and digital literacy education for thousands of students in Indonesia through the DBS Berpijar programme; providing training on digital topics, especially coding, to improve the competence of digital talents in Indonesia through the DBS Foundation Coding Camp programme; providing financial and digital literacy education for SMEs in various cities in Indonesia to improve business skills through the Kedai Belajar DBS programme. All the initiatives undertaken by Bank DBS Indonesia are in line with its third sustainability pillar, Impact Beyond Banking.
