Our vision

Ageing societies: From problem to opportunity

Why it's crucial to redefine the narrative on ageing.

SCROLL DOWN

By 2050, the ageing population in 15 countries across the Asia-Pacific region is projected to rise by 18.3%, reaching 620 million. In fact, by 2030, 30% of the populations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China will be over 65.

While these demographic shifts pose significant challenges, they also present valuable opportunities. As people live longer, individuals, businesses, and societies can harness the potential of longevity.

While the opportunities presented by an ageing population are significant, it's essential to recognise that the vulnerable elderly may encounter the greatest challenges. At DBS Foundation, we aim to challenge traditional perceptions of ageing, and in reshaping the narrative of ageing, DBS Foundation aims to address the needs of these vulnerable communities and foster their inclusion.

Why it matters

1.6bn

people are expected to be aged over 65 by 2050, more than doubling the current numbers.

426mil

people will be aged 80 or older by 2050, tripling the number from 2020.

14%

of adults aged 60 and over live with a mental disorder.

Impact Beyond Award

DBS Foundation has introduced the new Impact Beyond Award to support businesses developing innovative solutions for the world’s most “wicked” problems. This year, the focus is on the longevity needs of ageing societies, with SGD 3 million for three businesses (SGD 1 million each) to scale their impact.

Impact Beyond Dialogue

The inaugural Impact Beyond Dialogue, graced by Desmond Lee, Singapore’s Minister for National Development and Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration, brought together policymakers and business leaders to explore the changing role of businesses in society. The panel discussion explored ways to strengthen private-public partnerships in tackling the challenges and opportunities presented by ageing populations, especially in Singapore. The consensus was clear: businesses must go beyond problem-solving and actively create lasting, positive change in society.
