What is an Inactive Account?

As per RBI guidelines, if there are no customer induced transactions in the account for a period of over one year, the account is tagged as “Inactive”.

What is a Dormant /Inoperative Account?

As per RBI guidelines, if there are no customer induced transactions in the account for a period of over two years, the account is tagged as “Dormant/Inoperative”.

What is a Customer Induced Transaction?

The transactions in account which are in the nature of:

  1. a financial transaction initiated by or done at the behest of the account holder by the bank/ third party (an descriptive list is given in Annexure I) or;
  2. a non-financial transaction, or;
  3. KYC updation done in face-to-face physical mode or through digital channels such as internet banking or mobile banking application of the bank.
What is a Financial Transaction?

A monetary transaction in the savings/ current account of the customer with the bank either by way of a credit or debit transaction.

What is a Non-Financial Transaction?

An enquiry or request for any product/ service initiated by the account holder through any ATM or internet banking or mobile banking application of the bank or through Third Party Application Providers, which requires two-factor authentication (2FA). Illustratively, this includes transactions such as change in transaction limit, request for issue of cheque book/ credit card/ debit card, nomination facility, balance enquiry, etc.

What do I need to do to re-activate my Dormant/Inoperative savings account?

All you need to do is submit a self-attested copy of the following KYC documents at the nearest DBS Branch:

  1. One (1) latest passport-size photograph
  2. PAN Card or Form 60
  3. One (1) of the following Official Valid Documents (OVD):
    • Aadhaar
    • Passport
    • Driving License
    • Voters ID

As per RBI guidelines, there will not be any charges for activating a dormant bank account.

What happens if I don’t submit the documents?

If you don’t submit the documents, your account will continue to be frozen. In such a scenario, you won’t be able to perform any transactions from your account or use your Debit Card for any purchases.
