Do you want to study or work overseas in a country where English is spoken as the native language? Then, you need to appear for the Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL Exam^[3]. TOEFL is an online test that assesses your proficiency in speaking, reading, writing and comprehending English. TOEFL is accepted in over 150 countries and 11000+ institutions, where English is spoken as the first language. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the TOEFL board has introduced the TOEFL IBT® Home Edition Test as a safety measure as well for students around the world. TOEFL Registration Fees

The TOEFL exam fee varies from country to country. For Indian students, the TOEFL exam fee is 185 USD. The amount in INR depends on the exchange rate on the day you register for the test. The exam fee remains the same; whether you take the TOEFL IBT® Home Test or appear for your test at a test centre.

Additional TOEFL Exam Fees

Besides the registration fee of 185 USD, there are some additional TOEFL costs and charges. These are need-based charges and may not apply to every student. Here is a look at the additional TOEFL fees. All fees are payable in US dollars.

TOEFL Exam – Rescheduling, Cancellation and Refund Policy

You are allowed to reschedule or cancel your TOEFL registration. However, you must place your request at least 4 days before the test date. For instance, if your test is scheduled on a Friday, you need to place your rescheduling or cancellation request by Monday.

Rescheduling policy: If you choose to reschedule your appointment, you have to pay a fee of $60, before you can register for a new appointment. The rescheduling request should be placed through your ETS account online, or through the TOEFL® official app. As an Indian student appearing for the TOEFL exam, you may also contact your Regional Registration Centre to cancel or reschedule your appointment. You cannot cancel or reschedule your appointment via e-mail or post, or at the test centre.

Cancellation and refund: As mentioned above, you need to send your cancellation request at least four days before the test date. You will be eligible for a refund of 50% of the original TOEFL exam fees paid at the time of registration. The remaining amount is retained to cover the expenses associated with processing your registration and holding your seat at the test centre. Refunds for other services, besides the registration fee, are not provided.

Refund policy for ETS-initiated cancellations: You will be eligible for a full refund only if ETS cancels a test administration after you arrive at the test centre, and you choose not to reschedule the appointment. In case the test administration or scores after taking a test are cancelled by ETS, you will be refunded for the travel costs incurred by you, within 30 days of the original test date, provided you can provide documents proving the travel expenses. Note that the refund will only be processed for the student appearing for the test, and not any chaperone (parent, guardian, for instance) accompanying the student. Refunds are processed in US dollars, and cash refunds are not provided. In the case of card payments, the refund will be credited back to the source account, whereas cheque payments will be processed after 8 weeks^{1 2}

Acceptable Modes of Payment^[2] for TOEFL Exam Fee

You can pay your TOEFL fees through your preferred payment method which includes online remittance, debit or credit card payments, and electronic checks. You may also send paper cheques or money orders drawn in USD.

The acceptable payment method for TOEFL iBT course fees remittance varies based on how you register for the exam.

• If you register for TOEFL through your ETS account can make payments using debit and credit cards, electronic cheques or through your PayPal® account.
• If you register using your phone, you can pay the TOEFL exam fees via debit and credit cards and e-cheques.
• You can also mail in a paper cheque or send a money order.

Important facts about acceptable modes of payment

• Check the list of accepted debit and credit cards.
• Payments by cards are accepted in select local currencies and USD.
• E-cheques should be drawn of a bank in the United States in USD only.
• Paper checks should be hand-written, signed, and issued in USD. It should be made payable to ETS-TOEFL.
• Details such as bank's name and address, cheque number, payers name and address should be pre-printed on the cheque.

Unacceptable Modes of Payment

The TOEFL board also specifies some unaccepted modes of payments. You are not allowed to pay your TOEFL test fee in these forms:

• Post-dated checks
• Cash or demand drafts
• Currencies other than USD (For payments not made via credit or debit card)
• Receipts for bank checks
• Western Union®
• UNESCO® coupons
