Learn how to use debit card for online payments
When you open a Savings Bank Account, your bank gives you a starter kit. This starter kit comprises all the essentials you need to manage your account, including a passbook, a cheque book, and a debit card. The debit card doubles as your bank account in your pocket, in that you can use it anytime to pay for all kinds of transactions – from utility bill payments to fund transfers to retail and online shopping. Let us understand the different methods of debit card usage in this article.
A debit card is also known as an ATM card, which means that you can use it at Automated Teller Machines to withdraw cash. You can withdraw money from any ATM in India and abroad (in the case of international debit cards, by opting for international access). All you have to do is select your preferred transaction language, select the cash withdrawal option, key in the withdrawal amount, and enter your pin. The machine will dispense the funds. You can also check account balances at ATMs by following the same steps and choosing 'mini statement' or 'check balance' instead of cash withdrawal.
Yet another way how to use debit cards is at any retail or merchant outlet. You simply have to hand over the card to the payee, who will swipe the magnetic strip of the card on an electronic payment machine and enter the amount you owe them. You then have to enter the PIN and click on the green 'confirm' tab on the machine. The funds get debited from your account, thereby completing the transaction.
You can use your debit cards to pay for online shopping expenses and utility bill payments. The method of how to use debit cards for online payments is straightforward too. Select debit card as the mode of payment on the payment page and enter your 16-digit debit card number. Some online websites may ask you to select the type of card issuer or financial institution offering the debit card from Rupay, Visa or MasterCard. Enter your name on the card (optional), the expiration date in MMY/YY format and the 3-digit CVV embossed on the flip side of the card, above the magnetic strip. Once you enter these, you will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to authenticate the transaction to complete the online payment process.
Now that you know how to use debit card online, you can make all kinds of payments. Ensure you inform the bank at the earliest if your debit card is lost or stolen. You should not share your card number or secret ATM PIN with anyone. While you can spend money as needed to pay for various transactions, avoid saving your card information after completing online transactions as a safety measure.
